Our representative in Parliament has performed something of a U-Turn today in a letter to the Prime Minister – saying that “with great sadness” quitting her current Parliamentary role has become necessary in order to keep her “self respect intact”.
MP for Rushcliffe, Ruth Edwards, has previously stood firmly behind Boris Johnson, publicly supporting him in the ‘no confidence’ vote only a month ago when 148 other Conservative MPs voted to oust him from Downing Street. Despite many constituents writing asking her to vote otherwise, Ms Edwards revealed on social media she was one of the 211 Tory MPs on June 6th who did still support him. That’s despite 41% of her colleagues voting they had no confidence in the PM – many citing his lack of repentance over the ‘partygate’ scandal, his seemingly ‘economical’ use of the truth, and the UK public’s growing loss of trust in his leadership.
However, it’s apparent the ‘final straw’ for our own MP was when she discovered Mr Johnson had appointed Chris Pincher to a key and very sensitive role, despite knowing about the serious sexual allegations made against him. In her letter to Boris Johnson (below) she quits her role as Parliamentry Private Secretary to the Scotland Office, although still thanks the PM for “everything you have done” despite “my very great sadness that things have come to this.”
It appears yesterday’s high profile resignations of Rishi Sunak as Chancellor and Sajid Javid as Health Secretary were what triggered a raft of other resignations – and calls from senior figures that it was time for Boris to step down. This included from Michael Gove – who was then promptly sacked by the PM as Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Secretary!
Still showing no signs of quitting today, only time will tell how long Mr Johnson manages to cling on to power under the current circumstances – and also what the future will hold for Ruddington’s MP.
